For a speech no one outside the Maple Leafs dressing room heard, Jason Spezza was being compared to a wartime Winston Churchill for inspiring the Maple Leafs in Game 5.

The orator himself was quite humble about his spontaneous address, the day after a sluggish first period by a Toronto team that was in danger of being blown out again in the first period and falling behind in the series to Tampa Bay.

Toronto rallied from 2-0 to win 4-3 and every Leaf who came to the media podium since has cited Spezza’s vocal contribution.

“I felt like it was needed at the time and to speak from the heart,” Spezza said. “We’ll keep (what was said) in the room, (but) I loved the response. There was great desperation from our group, we recognized the situation we were in.”

Winger Michael Bunting, in his first NHL playoff battle, was all ears.

“You listen up,” Bunting said. “He’s been in this league a very long time, a leader in our room and he’s done a lot of good things.

“It was a great speech, it got everybody going.”
