Michael Bunting will miss the presence of Jason Spezza in the Maple Leafs’ dressing room, but is glad the recently retired veteran won’t be too far away.
When Spezza immediately joined the Leafs’ front office upon retiring at the end of May, Bunting was among those thrilled with the news of Spezza’s first post-playing job as a special assistant to general manager Kyle Dubas.
“He is still part of our team, just in a different role and everyone will still be excited to see him at the rink every day,” Bunting said. “I’m really happy he will be around the guys.
“He was a guy I looked up to all year, just the way he carried himself. He played so many games in this league and was still like a kid out there and in the room. It’s unfortunate his career is over, but he is sticking around and that’s awesome.”
